November Peak Rut

Writer's picture: Sam HolleySam Holley

In NE Ohio our peak rut each year occurs the second week of November. This always provides for exciting hunts although they are also full of challenges. With the dominant bucks locked on hot does it is very difficult to get them to move away from her. Normally, she will be seeking refuge in thick brush, unharvested corn fields or some other heavy cover and he will be guarding the prize so to speak. If she does decide to move it is usually in fast full out spirts that may or may not come within range. If they do happen to pass in range they are difficult to stop for a shot! But these lock downs only last for 24-48 hours and then it is off to seek the next doe. This 24/7 mature buck movement is what keeps in the woods waiting for those close encounters.

Good luck this November!
